The Ocean Estate in east London is one of the most disadvantaged in the country. With the help of a New Deal for Communities grant the Ocean Maths Project was launched in the estate's schools.
Its aim was to help children make greater progress in learning maths. The philosophy behind the project was simple; children who get support with their school work at home make much better progress in a subject.
The challenge was to get parents, many of whom had not enjoyed their own time at school, involved in doing maths homework.
